The Golden Rules of Cava

Here are The Golden Rules of Cava from Institut del Cava, the association of Cava producers that Cavas Torelló is member.

The right glass

To enjoy Cava at its best, it is important to choose the right glass. The best is the tulip glass, which allows the flow of bubbles to be seen most clearly. The glass should be thin, completely transparent and without colour.

The ideal temperature

The recommended temperature for drinking Cava ranges between 5 and 7º. This temperature should be reached gradually by leaving the Cava in the fridge for a few hours before serving. At the table, the best way of keeping Cava cool is in an ice bucket with water and ice.

The cork

Bottles of Cava can only be stoppered with a real cork. Cork manufacturers and Cava producers go to great lengths to ensure that these two natural products complement each other.

The art of opening the bottle

Care needs to be taken when removing the wire and the cork from the bottle. Always avoid sudden movements. To make this magic moment perfect, the bottle should be tilted at an angle of about 45 º.

The art of holding the glass

The glass, delicate, transparent and elegant invies us to treat Cava with care. It is best to hold the stem of the glass, as body heat can affect the temperature of the Cava.

Cava at any time

One of the great qualities of Cava is its versatility. It can be drunk as an aperitif or to accompany a meal from beginning to end. In the afternoon, evening or at night, a well chilled glass of Cava can add sparkle to any moment.

What kind of Cava do you recommend?

There is a variety of Cava to suit any occasion. The driest (Brut Nature and Brut) are recommended as aperitifs and as an accompaniment to meals. The sweeter varieties (Seco and Semiseco) are best with dessert.

«Gran Reserva»

The minimum ageing time for Cava is nine months (according to The Cava Regulatory Board). Only when Cava has been aged for more than 30 months can it be called Gran Reserva. This Cava is the ideal accompaniment to a substantial meal.

No light or heat

Light and heat are generally harmful to this well-balanced wine. To keep it at its best, it should be placed in its box in the coolest room in the house.

Does Cava improve with age?

This exceptional wine does not need to be kept in a horizontal position once it has left the cool dark cellars. This is the best time to drink it. With careful storage, however, it can be kept in the home for a reasonable time.
